A qualified dividend is a type of dividend payment that meets specific criteria set by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), allowing it to be taxed at the lower long-term capital gains tax rate rather than the higher ordinary dividend income tax rate. This preferential tax treatment is designed to encourage long-term investment in corporations and reduce the tax burden on shareholders who hold their investments for an extended period.
To be classified as a qualified dividend, the dividend must be paid by a U.S. corporation or a qualified foreign corporation. Additionally, the shareholder must meet a holding period requirement: the stock must be held for more than 60 days during the 121-day period that begins 60 days before the ex-dividend date. For preferred stock, the holding period is more than 90 days during the 181-day period that begins 90 days before the ex-dividend date.
